Maxine Toya is well known for her figurative pottery. This is one of her classic storytellers. It is a mother holding a single chile. Her cloak is carved into the clay and fully polished a deep red. The edge of her dress is tightly painted and there is a classic style to the face of the figure. The storyeller was traditionally fired. It is a creative use of various clays, along with both sculptural and painted designs. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Maxine Toya”.
